Attention US travelers: Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced that US citizens will no longer be able to use a driver's license as a valid form of identification for travel to Cuba. Starting on June 12, 2023, all US travelers must possess a valid passport to enter Cuba.
This change is a result of tightened travel restrictions imposed by the US government. According to CBP, the move is necessary to strengthen security measures and prevent unauthorized travel to Cuba.
What This Means for US Travelers
If you are a US citizen planning to travel to Cuba, it is essential to apply for a passport immediately. You can apply for a passport in person at a passport acceptance facility or by mail. The processing time for a passport varies, so it is recommended to initiate the process as soon as possible.
Note that you may still be able to use a driver's license to board your flight to Cuba. However, you will need a valid passport to present upon arrival at the border. Failure to have a passport will result in being denied entry into Cuba.
Other Important Travel Requirements
In addition to a passport, US travelers to Cuba will also need:
- A Cuba Tourist Card (also known as a Visa)
- Proof of accommodation in Cuba
- Proof of travel health insurance
It is also important to note that US travelers are not permitted to travel to Cuba for tourism purposes. The authorized reasons for travel include visiting family, official business, educational activities, or humanitarian projects.
